WRITING TIPS FROM SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN THERE

Wednesday, April 11, 2018

A few weeks ago, a shared some tips to start writing your first novel.
The post was very successful, I received a lot of great feedback on that and a lot of people replied to me on Twitter just to tell me how inspired they felt after reading it and how much those simple tips helped them start their own novel.
So I thought to share some more writing tips with you since Camp NaNoWriMo has already begun and let's face it, we all need that little push, that motivation to keep us going.

So here you have it, more useful writing tips from someone who's been there (and still is!)

1.
TREAT YOUR WRITING AS A JOB

I know it's not easy and I know a lot of you write as a hobby, something you do outside of everything else, to relax and maybe have something else under your belt.
But if you don't think about it as a job, as the most important thing, then stop. Yes, you can write for fun (we all start that way!) and that's alright, but if you really wanna do something with it other than letting it sit in your drawers, then you need to set some priorities straight and writing=priority.

2.
DON'T LET PEOPLE DISCOURAGE YOU

It used to happen to me ALL. THE. TIME.
I used to tell people that I wanted to write, that I wanted to be an author and they would laugh at me, like some stupid joke.
It wasn't funny.
And it usually hurt me so deeply that I would stop writing to focus on something more "real".
And I did it all wrong.
Writing is what keeps me going, is what keeps me hoping and dreaming and who cares about what people say? If you don't want them to hurt you then don't tell them. Tell the people that truly care about you and your dreams and those you can lift you up whenever you feel a hundred feet underground.
Believe in your work, in your dreams and don't let people ruin that for you.

3.
DON'T BE ASHAMED OF WHAT INSPIRES YOU

Is it fanfiction? Is it money? Is it popularity?
Great, keep that goal in mind and keep writing.
Have you started writing fanfiction about, idk, One Direction? Keep going. You know that girl? Oh, C'mon! You know her. Anna Todd, anyone? She built a community around her fanfiction about Harry Styles and now she has six books published, living her writer dream.
She's a bloody best-selling author now and all it took her was a Wattpad account and a story to tell.
Paramount picked up her books, ladies and gents!
Whatever you're writing, however you started, just keep going. You're doing great!

4.
THE SECRET RECIPE

is to write, write, write.
There is no other way, the more you write, the more inspired you are and the more you want to write.
NGUGI WA THIONG'O once said:
"write. write. write and write again and you will get it right."
So don't wait for inspiration to strike you like lightning. Write anyway. You may be surprised by how much writing you can get done in those #ugh days!

I hope you find this post useful and inspiring. There really isn't a magic potion to do this, you just need to write and let your fantasy flow.

LET'S CHAT!
Have you joined Camp NaNo this month? What are you working on atm? I'm hoping to finish my very first novel which should be 100K words long but I also need to edit it so we'll see!
